Practical Biosecurity Takes Centre Stage at TFTA Producer Talk

Recently, Dr Paul Talling, one of Livetec’s Biosecurity Advisors was invited to speak at a producer talk hosted by the Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association (TFTA) — an association of independent farmers and producers across the UK committed to high welfare standards for slow-grown, free-range and dry-aged Christmas turkey production.

Over the last 12 months, Livetec has been invited to numerous producer events across the UK, both in person and online, delivering bespoke talks focused on biosecurity, resilience and practical disease prevention strategies reflecting many different production systems.

The latest event with TFTA highlights that conversations are taking place and biosecurity is being taken seriously across the whole poultry sector. This talk particularly focused on how traditional free-range farmers could reduce disease risk whilst still maintaining their high welfare and unique production systems.

Key discussion areas included:

    • Wild bird - prediction and protection
    • Vermin - exclusion and control
    • Rainwater - management around poultry housing and on the range.
    • People/vehicles - reducing unnecessary access to site and birds.

Livetec’s approach to biosecurity is unique in that its advice is always focused on practical implementation.

Many businesses are told what they should be doing but very few are ever shown how to do it. Livetec’s experienced staff work alongside producers, to deliver realistic and workable solutions that fit the realities of individual farming systems.

As Paul explained during the event:

“Quite often, a few small but focused changes can make a significant difference when it comes to reducing disease risk. It’s about understanding all the potential risks on that farm and where possible, systematically negating them, or at least reducing them, one by one.”

Practical biosecurity advice cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach, Livetec will always help producers make proportionate and appropriate improvements that strengthen disease resilience and support long-term flock protection.
