Reflections on Biosecurity and Resilience at Pig & Poultry 2026

The British Pig & Poultry Fair 2026 reinforced something we have been seeing more and more across the livestock sector, biosecurity is no longer being viewed simply as a response to disease outbreaks. It is becoming part of wider conversations around resilience, preparedness and long-term farm management.

Over the two days, I had the opportunity to speak on the Innovation Stage alongside Julian Sparrey, Stuart Bird from Bird Brothers Ltd and Annie Davis from George Veterinary Group during our session, Predict, Prevent, Protect: Year-Round Disease Risk & Biosecurity.

A lot of the conversations throughout the event reflected a sector that is becoming increasingly proactive. Producers are looking beyond reacting to disease risk and focusing more on practical systems, behaviours and routines that strengthen resilience every day.

At Livetec, a big part of the work we do is helping producers turn biosecurity from a written protocol into something that becomes part of everyday farm routines.

One of the points I made during the panel was that mindset beats manuals.

You can have strong infrastructure and good processes in place, but if people do not understand the “why” behind them, consistency becomes difficult. Behaviour, training and communication all play a critical role in reducing risk.

That was a recurring theme throughout the discussions at Pig & Poultry. Whether speaking to producers, vets or industry partners, there was clear recognition that long term resilience comes from combining practical biosecurity measures with behaviours that people can realistically maintain day to day.

Some of the most valuable conversations centred around:

  • Making biosecurity practical rather than overwhelming
  • Improving visitor and vehicle management
  • Helping staff understand where risks come from
  • Building a stronger culture around prevention on farm

There’s definitely a growing recognition that improving resilience takes collaboration across the industry.
